Smoking Addiction BBQ is a family-team based out of Manitowoc, WI.  We are a KCBS competition team founded in 2009. Team founding members include Kevin, Ben, Joel and Andy Schmitt.

We use the best-of-breed equipment to create what we believe to be damn tasty BBQ.  St. Louis-style ribs, succulent chicken thighs, tangy and juicy pulled pork, tender brisket and some amazing baked beans are what we make.

Team Smoking Addiction competed in 6 competitions in 2010 spanning Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. The team is planning on 8 contests in 2011 including the American Royal. With a fully equipped BBQ trailer and 2 years of competition under our belts, 2011 will a year to remember for our family-based team.

Libertyville results and 2010 year recap

Libertyville was the final contest for Smoking Addiction BBQ in 2010. We finished the year having competed in 6 contests (5 KCBS and 1 exhibition), we learned the limits of our equipment and how to deal with curveballs when cooking during rain, hail and even with generator failures.

Libertyville was an interesting contest as Ben met the rest of the team on-location. A long drive from Ames, IA to Libertyville allowed us to setup early Friday morning; this made for a much lower pressure cook as we have plenty of time to relax. We cooked next to Captain Ron (2nd time this year) and were close to the end of our line. We met friends from a dairy present as a sponsor and shared our BBQ and meals with them.

Joel and Kevin had the foresight to get 1/2 inch ribeye steaks from our sponsor, Whitelaw Sausage Company. We cooked them on our Weber Performer on Friday night and finished them with onions, garlic, salt and pepper on a toasted bun. The sandwiches were simply amazing and a great way to relax before our long cook.

Casey and Ben met the Smokehunters as we shared beverages and stories with this team. Their cooker (the meat monster from Peoria Custom Cookers) was mid-evil looking and quite neat.

Turn-ins went well on Saturday morning even though we had a generator failure. All 4 meats were turned in on-time but we definitely made some stupid mistakes during brisket trimming and some of our spicing...so, we should have done better. Nonetheless, we did finish 18th overall out of 15th out of 45 teams with a 2nd place finish in pork.
